A waterproofing membrane can be laid out directly on the structural slab to prevent this. There are two types: the sheet membrane and the liquid applied membrane. Sheet membranes come in a few varieties such as rubberized asphalt membranes, PVC membranes and composite membranes. They are robust, self-reinforced and do not need any special equipment to unfurl them when laying them out.
Liquid waterproofing are usually polymer based coatings such as polymer-modified asphalt and polyurethane liquid. Application consists of a primer coat and two layers of top coat. This method is popular for its ease of application.
It has excellent adhesion to nearly all types of surfaces. Once it has air cured, it forms a smooth seamless membrane which allows for maximum water runoff. The liquid membranes can also be applied in gutters, in basements, in swimming pools, and balconies.
For internal areas with high levels of humidity such as the bathroom, toilet and kitchen, the cementitious waterproofing is the best method. These materials are easily available as well as easy to mix and apply.
