Torch-on Membrane

Torch-on membrane is another method used on flat roof top waterproofing, walls and structures. This creates a stronger membrane layer to protect against dampness, because it is made of bitumen and polymers. Thus, it is able to prevent water pooling with its water resistant surface. In addition, this method requires heat torching to allow it to melt onto the surface. Hence, this will create a watertight protective membrane.

Whilst flexible cementitious membrane is liquid chemical nature, torch-on membrane is sticky, not harmful to environment. It is highly effective, making it one of the most reliable membrane systems.

There are 2 types of torch on membranes:

  1. Atactic Polypropylene Plastic modified asphalt (APP) that melts when we heat it with a torch.
  2. Styrene Butadiene Styrene (SBS) is a rubber modified asphalt that doesn’t torch well. However, it is suitable for built up wall and areas that needs highly flexible sheet.

Advantage of Torch-on Bituminous Membrane

One of the advantage is its green roofing solution. It can reduce carbon footprints whilst also protecting your home. The fumes released during installation are not harmful to humans and emits low noise pollution.

It also has a long life span due to its tightness of membrane against the surface. This method offers a simple way to seal your subject area. It also protects the insulation of the house whilst reflecting the sunlight.

Some of the reasons for using torch-on membrane is its feature as non water soluble, non biodegradable and non toxic. Besides that, it also acts as a seal and is able to support gutters and flower boxes. Its functionality also allows us to use it on both commercial and residential waterproofing projects.

Conclusion

However, do note that not everyone can install torch-on membrane. It is advisable to hire a waterproofing specialist contractor to propose a suitable solution. This is to avoid any potential future water leakage, if the root cause for water leaking is not fix.
